Sustainable neighborhood development

The power of sustainability
On 11 and 12 November 2010, the neighborhood research study group of the German Geographical Society (DGfG) will hold a session on “Sustainable neighborhood development. The influence of a normative concept“, a concept which has made a comeback in recent neighborhood development: buildings are being evaluated based on their sustainability; evaluation systems are being developed for neighborhoods and residential estates; and the 2,000 Watt Society has become a key model for new neighborhood projects. The conference offers four different topic areas, all dealing with the influence of the concept of sustainability in the context of neighborhood development.

Site development in line with the 2,000 Watt Society
Britt Lahmann, sustainable building consultant at Intep, will present early results of the “2,000-Watt-compatible site development” project, an initiative of the Swiss Federal Office of Energy. The project is aimed at complementing the SIA energy efficiency guidelines for special and mixed sites which are made up of various buildings types such as residential buildings, offices, stores, restaurants and health care facilities, or even commercial and industrial buildings. The project’s main focus lies on questions of methodology as well as technology and ecology.
