Migros supermarket in Heiden: a pilot project in sustainability
The Migros Cooperative Eastern Switzerland is planning a new building containing a total sales area of over 9000 sq ft, apartments and an underground parking garage. Five architecture firms were invited to submit projects for a modern supermarket to serve as a model for sustainable store design. Intep was put in charge of specifying the tender requirements and evaluating the project proposals with regard to ecological and economic criteria. Severin Lenel, managing director at Intep in Zurich, presented the results to the jury and drafted a proposal for optimization for the winning project.
A number of factors contribute to making to the winning proposal a sustainable project: The construction will be made of wood; a significant share of the required electrical operating energy will be supplied by a photovoltaic system and the heat discharged by the commercial cooling systems of the supermarket will be used to heat the ten apartments. The parking garage is ventilated and lighted by natural methods and contributes to both re-cooling and heat recovery (heat discharged by parking vehicles).
Intep congratulates the winning team from the architecture firm Bauart Architekten und Planer AG and we are looking forward to the realization of the pilot store in Heiden!
